I ve always loved women. In kindergarten, I followed my teacher home one winter s day and stood behind a tree, waiting, for what I can t recall. My teacher, the Widow Winnie was somewhat of a forlorn creature, a thin, tall blonde with hair braided and set upon her head like a permanent halo. I thought she was an angel, always stopping by my desk with words of encouragement.Obviously, my frosty breath gave me away. Soon, I heard her calling, Philip, what are you doing out there? Come in. Inside her home, I was treated to milk and cookies and a fairy tale in which a Prince Charming of sorts rescues a damsel in distress. After that, I always dreamed of such rescues.Charlotte, my collegiate amour, begged to be rescued from her parents who she professed to hate. I was a most willing Prince Charming, particularly for a damsel with exploding hormones. One night, her father returned unexpectedly from work to find us locked in a passionate embrace. What are you doing, he screamed as if it wasn t obvious. Uh, ugh, we answered timidly. The next day, he sought me out in the college cafeteria, sat us down with his hands on the table. What are your plans for my daughter? he asked, a steely look in his eyes. I love her. She loves me. We want to get married. Oh, do you now. And how do you plan to live? he asked with reddening face. I noticed his hands curling into fists. On my writing, sir. Your writing! he screamed. You want to take my daughter to starve in a hovel while you try to make a few pennies writing. I ll kill you first. Good knight rising. Go ahead. Is there a more noble thing than to die for love? He looked at me with contempt, or was it pity, and stormed away.Well, while I won the skirmish, I lost the war. Charlotte called the next day to say her father convinced her we had little, if any future. Curtain falls on drama.Nicole and a dazzling night in Paris, first night of spring. Chestnut trees in blossom, singers, dancers, fire eaters and a crush of joyous Parisians. The sky was brilliant with stars elbowing other stars for a place in the heavens. We sat briefly at a small table at a bistro on the Champs d Elysees enjoying an aperitif and the passing parade. Soon, we were in that parade, walking hand in hand until we reached Les Deux Magots, legendary restaurant of Hemingway, Sartre, Camus, and many others, and now, moi. Alas, we found the journey mattered and not the food.Nicole, Nicole. I soon lost you. My star had faded. Was it me or my terrible French? My Lily of the Valley, flaming hair, fiery temper.Together, we explored California, Napa and Sonoma when the crush of grapes and tourists fades to memory and those who work the wineries pause to catch a breath. Fall colors creep into the vineyards, reds, rusts and yellows, spewing across thousands of acres of tired vines. The sun rises brightly and slowly in the morning, heightening the intensity of the reds and rust, but like a runner tiring in the late, late stages of a race, it seemed to gasp in mid-afternoon, then throwing out a blanket of lemony haze. She breaks the moment, screaming, Not one more winery. Then, there was you.A beach a short ferry s ride from Venice. We sit huddled under a blanket on the veranda of a near deserted hotel. Dinner that night is bread, cheese, sausage and wine. The wine and our body temperatures raise comfort and spirits. The entertainment is reading of the Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, Love in the Time of Cholera which we both enjoy. We reprise a theme. How long should this moment last? Forever. Until the end of time. We laugh and snuggle closer under the blanket. r http://www.michaelkorsbag.us.com

Johnson, the best country banker the state of Arkansas ever had. These words pretty much describe Mr. Johnson who passed away on December 18, 2014 at Southridge Assisted Living. He was born on May 18, 1919 in the community of Morganton, Arkansas to his parents John Henry and Cora Odom Johnson. He married the love of his life and best friend Nevalynn Aldridge Johnson on September 7, 1942. It was truly a wonderful marriage of 59 years, Nevalynn passing away in 2001. Mr. Johnson served his country in World War II in the European Theater being stationed at Thetford, England. After the war he returned to Heber Springs where he began a long and illustrious career in banking with the Cleburne County Bank. He worked his way up to President in a short time. He was known throughout the banking community and with customers alike as a fair and honest person. He was instrumental in helping with the initial financing of Greers Ferry Dam and related structures. He helped bring industry to the county and was always a friend to the farmers in the area. He truly believed in the working man. He made many loans that were confirmed by a handshake because he knew and cared about people. He also helped and promoted many young people in farming by buying their livestock at the county fair. Mr. Johnson was the type of banker you hardly see anymore. He wanted the bank to grow, but more important to him was the help it could give people in making their lives a success. Mr. Johnson was a faithful member of the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church and the Friendly Sunday School class. He served many areas of the church: Chairman of the Board, Trustee, Chairman of Finance ,and probably the one that meant more to him, a member of the intercessory prayer group. He was a past member of the Lions Club and YMBC, a member of Rotary International for 60-plus years serving as President and being a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Cleburne County Soil Conservation Board for many years. In 2006, being a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, they honored him by induction into the Hall of Honor for all of his contributions to the community. He was a 33rd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Scimitar Shrine Temple. As previously mentioned he was preceded in death by his wife Nevalynn. Also preceding him were his parents; brother and sister-in-law Howard and Nobia Johnson; infant sister who died at birth; and nephew Johnny L. Johnson. Those left to celebrate his life are his son and daughter-in-law Ricky and Mary Jane Johnson of Searcy; two grandsons Ryan and wife Emily, and Joshua, both of Little Rock; two great granddaughters Audrey Jane and Nora Lynn; brother-in-law Walter Aldridge of Heber Springs and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Page 2 of 2 - The family would like to extend their thanks to the aides, nurses and owners of Southridge Assisted Living for their love, kindness and respect. Thanks also to Hospice Home Care for their assistance. Visitation was Monday, December 22nd followed by a celebration of his life at First United Methodist Church of Heber Springs with Rev. Tommy Toombs officiating. Interment was at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Friendly Sunday School class, Intercessory Prayer Group, and Heber Springs Rotary Club. Memorials may be made to the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church, 1099 W. Pine St., Heber Springs, AR 72543. Opponents and supporters of the 2004 constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and woman embarked on a day of back-to-back hearings over lawsuits in federal and state courts. Neither court issued a ruling Thursday and did not indicate when they might do so. "This court should defer to the democratic process and defer to the voters of Arkansas, and hold that there is no fundamental right to same-sex marriage," Assistant Attorney General Colin Jorgensen told the state's highest court Thursday morning. But at least two members of the court expressed skepticism, with one questioning whether it would allow the state to enforce prohibitions against other minority groups. Later Thursday, a lawyer for two gay couples suing the state in federal court told a judge that institutional discrimination could not be tolerated. "We are not a majority-rule country. Just because the voters go and try to vote away a right of people that are not in the majority, they don't get to do that if it violates those people's constitutional rights. That is the cool thing about America," lawyer Jack Wagoner told U.S. District Judge Kristine Baker during a 56-minute argument that included an 86-page PowerPoint presentation. High court justices are weighing whether uphold Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza's May decision that the ban violates the state and federal constitutions. That led to 541 same-sex couples being wed during the week before his ruling was put on hold. Judges across the country have ruled against bans similar to Arkansas' since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of a federal anti-gay marriage law in June 2013, and gay marriage is legal in more than half of the U.S. Wagoner, separately representing 20 same-sex couples challenging the ban in state court, said Arkansas' place in history could be determined by a favorable state Supreme Court's ruling, and compared it to Gov. Orval Faubus' fight against school desegregation in 1957. "For 50 years, that was our national image. Our next 50 years in history could be cemented if we're on this side of the team," he said. Meanwhile, two justices in particular took turns questioning the state's lawyer. "What's to keep the state from enforcing those positions by the majority of the people to the detriment of unpopular minorities?" Justice Donald Corbin asked Jorgensen at one point. Justice Paul Danielson questioned how the amendment could be considered constitutional if they believed it conflicted with other rights in Arkansas' constitution. Page 2 of 2 - "Are you saying the declaration of rights in our constitution ... is still there, except for homosexuals?" Danielson asked. Jorgensen said the state doesn't believe the amendment conflicts with those rights, but said that amendments trump earlier provisions of the constitution if there's a conflict. Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, whose office is representing the state, has said he supports legalizing same-sex marriage but will continue defending Arkansas' ban. McDaniel, a Democrat, is leaving office in January due to term limits. Both state and federal lawsuits are also challenging the state's prohibition on recognizing gay marriages from other states. n www.michaelkorsbag.us.com
