There鈥檚 a second version of this that we announced (at the International CES trade show) last week that is HomeKit-enabled, so it鈥檒l have the special sauce for Apple in it. (HomeKit is Apple鈥檚 answer to controlling smart-home devices made by different manufacturers from one central location.)Q. Some home-automation device companies use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. But other companies like yours use mesh technology. Why mesh? (Mesh networks are made up of numerous nodes that 鈥渢alk鈥?to each other.) A. Well, those technologies, they were built to solve a single problem and they do that very well. Unfortunately, it doesn鈥檛 map to the connected home very well. Connected homes already have dozens of connected devices. They鈥檙e going to have hundreds. Analysts in the industry think it might be north of 500 devices in one home. And Bluetooth, the maximum network size is nine. Now, there are people out there trying to expand that and create a mesh on top of that. We know when you do something like that you鈥檝e effectively, you鈥檙e trying to make a round peg fit into a square hole. It鈥檚 not going to do it elegantly. (Reporter鈥檚 note: There鈥檚 an ongoing debate over which method is best, as advances continue to be made.)Q. What are some challenges and limitations with mesh networking?A. Routing tables. What happens a 200-node network, 200 by 200 paths. That鈥檚 a huge table and it gets real hard to manage. Every node has to be able to talk to every other node. So you have to be able to manage for that eventuality.Q. Last year was a big one in terms of Insteon鈥檚 retail growth. Tell me about that.A. We increased our footprint by almost sixfold. A lot of that happened later in the year. We鈥檙e at about 3,000 locations. Walmart was the most recent new brand added. Prior to that, we went from a test to all of the stores in the Menards chain. They鈥檙e the third largest big-box, home-improvement chain in the U.S. It was all good growth.Q. Other milestones last year?A. The shipment of Hub ii was one key event. What do you do to ensure customer data is secure?A. It鈥檚 a major concern. It just requires constant attention. We encrypt all of our cloud-to-device communication, at bank-level security. No bank vault is impenetrable, but we can鈥檛 take any other position and we hope to succeed.Q. What kind of security system do you have in place?A. There鈥檚 active monitoring. There鈥檚 passive monitoring. There are specialists that we engage to advise on it from an outside perspective.Q. Do you sell customer data to marketing companies?A. No. I think consumers will not accept that. We applaud Apple鈥檚 perspective on this, taking a privacy-first approach. The data is valuable to the extent we provide it back to the consumer. It can help with personal security in that you can learn how the homeowner lives in the house while they鈥檙e there so you can make the house look like they鈥檙e there when they鈥檙e not.
