Did Lee spend his career in Arkansas? No. Did Lee fight any battles near Arkansas? No. So why worry with keeping both holidays when Robert E. Lee was not in the state? The answer is simple: Lee was a man of integrity and honor and many brave Arkansas soldiers fought and died under his command. To remove Lee from the holiday calendar would be to choose to ignore the ultimate sacrifice tens of thousands of Arkansas soldiers paid by answering the call for their state the same state that 150 years later intentionally forgot them. Does MLK need to be remembered? Absolutely. Every culture and demographic of Arkansan deserves their heroes and role models. Today someone might idolize a basketball star or a performer. Perhaps a civil rights leader is your role model. That is fantastic! But to some, that role model might take the shape of a well-dressed military officer atop his horse with his sword in his hand. Arkansas was not bereft of her military actions that occurred between the years of 1861-1865. Here we are in the final year of the 150th year commemoration of the Civil War and everything we have been taught about Arkansas and American history seems to take a back seat to the unfair mythology that surrounds this catastrophic event in our nation's history. To remove Robert E. Lee from the observed holidays in Arkansas is only a first step. What next? Will our Confederate dead be dug up and removed to be bulldozed into ravines and ditches? Too late. That has already occurred at the Little Rock National Cemetery. Could the next step be to remove the Confederate flag from public and private building? Too late. That has already occurred as well. Would the whole history of our state be censored in public classrooms? Too late. Common Core has already made sure that students will never learn about the heroes of days gone by. To remove Lee from the holidays observed by the state would only prove that the legislature cannot be bothered with the concept of diversity. These same politicians will be the first to say they are for a diverse culture, only as long as that picture of diversity fits in with their ideals of a mythological culture of politico.
