As most of you know, I am proud to be from Texas originally. I guess I would have to say, however, that I am technically only a second generation Texan. I was born in Texas as was my father. It is an interesting tale about how my grandfather got from Kentucky to Texas. The story goes that he walked all the way from south central Kentucky to central Texas when he was only 15 years old. There is only one motivation that a young man would have to do something like that love. Yes, my grandfather had fallen in love with a girl whose parents had moved to Texas, taking his sweetheart with them. So, motivated by love Meredith Benjamin Henager walked some 1000 miles from Adair County, Kentucky, to Coryell County, Texas, circa the year 1888 to be with his one, true ladylove. There was only one problem. He arrived in Texas only to find that his sweetheart had married someone else. My grandfather s lady did not seem to return his affections. So, he promptly found himself another bride, got married, and settled down to raise a family a rather large one, mind you with Mary Edna Ferrell, my grandmother. Now, my grandmother was known as a harsh woman. I don t know exactly why, except maybe she wasn t too keen on being Grandpa s second choice. I only remember a couple of interactions with Grandma, which I plan to write about another time. The fact is, I never really knew her. However, I was told, and told often, that I had better tread lightly around her. Children should be seen and not heard. I was also told that, although Grandma was short of stature, she was quite strong and stout. One story that stuck in my head about her concerned a time my father got a new B-B gun. He seems to have been shooting at an old milk jug when a B-B ricocheted off it and struck one of my aunts on the leg. Of course, she ran to tell her mother about her brother s his meanness. Upon hearing the news, the story goes, Grandma ran into the yard, grabbed the gun, and promptly broke it in half over her knee. She must have been a stout woman, indeed! Whatever the reason for her cantankerousness being Grandpa s second choice or having so many children my paternal grandparents seemed have had a rather strained relationship. Of course, as I was told, Grandpa could be a rather harsh person too. I can relate to Grandma and Grandpa, however. My first real, true love ended up marrying someone else too. Being the second choice is no picnic. I have often wondered what my father s family would have been like if his father had married his first love. And I wonder, then, how our next generation family would have been different. It s fun to speculate. Love is a huge motivating factor in life. Stories have been written and songs sung about people who have been inspired to greatness simply because someone loved them. The Apostle Paul tells us, For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselvesbut for him who died for themand was raised again. (2 Corinthians 5: 14-15, NIV) Jesus Christ demonstrates for us the most noble kind of love self-giving, self-sacrificing love. If we can experience that love, then we will be motivated compelled, as Paul says to love as well. We will be motivated by love to live unselfishly.
