It just got real, real popular.鈥? 鈥?Mattel Hot Wheels sponsorship: 鈥淚n the late 鈥?0s, I got the idea from kids having generic Hot Wheels cars that it might make a nice toy with our animals on there, so I went to Mattel with the idea and they liked it and started making millions of these cars. There鈥檚 millions of children worldwide that grew up with those Hot Wheels cars and Mongoose bicycles. A lot of those kids have had kids and they come to the races for autographs.鈥? 鈥?How he鈥檇 like to be remembered: 鈥淛ust somebody that did well in the sport that everyone loved. I thought it was neat that I got the nation involved in major sponsors. In the early days, we were lucky if we got a can of oil or a spark plug. To get paid money and get uniforms and trucks and do it professionally, we showed NASCAR and Formula One how to get major sponsors involved. We signed Mattel, and I got a marketing company that hit all the sponsors like Coca-Cola, Goodyear and Champion spark plugs, and we put their decals on the side of the car. It put NHRA and drag racing on the map when we did that. I brought that to the sport.鈥? 鈥?Since retiring in 1992: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 drive, but I鈥檓 still involved. I work mostly for a drag racer magazine, so that keeps me in the sport. I go to races and talk to people and write.鈥? 鈥?The allure of drag racing today: 鈥淭hese top fuel cars now, they鈥檝e got 10,000 to 12,000 horsepower. You know how you hear advertisements like you can buy a new car that will run 0 to 60 in 3 or 4 seconds? These top fuel dragsters run 150 mph in less than a second from a standing start. The noise and the power shakes the ground. It鈥檚 an experience you can鈥檛 experience on TV. You鈥檝e got to be there.鈥?Don Prudhomme, 72, aka 鈥楾he Snake鈥? 鈥?Lives in: Rancho Santa Fe 鈥?Claim to fame: Six-time NHRA world champion 鈥?Personal cars today: GMC Denali, 1967 GMC pickup 鈥?The allure of drag racing back in the day: 鈥淔or me, it was everything. I was in the Road Kings, the local car club out in Burbank, when hot rods were the thing to have. You weren鈥檛 anybody unless you had a hot rod running up and down Van Nuys Boulevard or Sepulveda, racing on the side streets and of course going to organized drag racing. Pomona was one of the first places to do that. In those days, if kids didn鈥檛 follow sports, there really wasn鈥檛 much to do. So it was cars. It鈥檚 all we ever knew and all we ever cared about.鈥? 鈥?Street racing today: 鈥淭hey鈥檙e driving those crotch rockets or Japanese cars or whatever they are and zooming down the freeway and jumping from lane to lane. I see those guys all the time, and I don鈥檛 like it. It鈥檚 dangerous. I don鈥檛 like speed on the streets. We didn鈥檛 do that. We drag raced on the street a little bit when we first started. We鈥檇 go out in the orange fields in the San Fernando Valley on a side road and drag race in the wee hours of the night. There was no cross traffic. I was never one of those guys that experienced that much street racing. Once we discovered the drag strip, racing on the street was over. We went to the drags. You could win something, like a trophy.鈥? 鈥?Orange County International Raceway: 鈥淲hen they first built the track, it was the latest and the greatest in drag racing. When Bill Donor came up with the 64 funny car show, it was a drag race and a rock concert all built in one and that had everything to do with building drag racing up in Southern California. It was the most fun I ever had. It was the 鈥?0s. Drag racing was growing leaps and bounds. You鈥檇 have a race with 64 funny cars. It鈥檚 hard to get 16 to go to Winternationals. We had 64. It was smoke and thunder and, Jesus, halter tops for the girls.鈥? 鈥?Is drag racing as much fun today? 鈥淚t鈥檚 like talking to an old rock 鈥檔鈥?roll guy and asking if he鈥檚 still excited to see somebody鈥檚 concert. It has its moments for me, but it doesn鈥檛 turn me on like it used to. And that鈥檚 mainly because it鈥檚 just a different group of guys. It鈥檚 a bunch of rich guys doing it now, except for John Force. We turned it into a business, and these guys have turned it into who can spend the most money. We did it because we loved it. There was no money in it.鈥? 鈥?Career highlights: 鈥淲hen I look back at it, I think about how we all took a bunch of parts from a junkyard and welded up these tube frames and got in something that was totally dangerous. I think about that a lot.鈥? 鈥?Why he left the sport: 鈥淚t was the same thing John Force is facing right now. It had to do with money. In the 11th hour, the sponsor we had for quite some time got purchased. We had three months to find several millions of dollars to continue, and I elected not to spend my own money and get out. Plus I was getting a little tired of it. They say things happen for a reason. I found out the reason is that I was pretty much over it. The cost of it was just brutal.鈥? 鈥?Retirement: 鈥淚t took awhile to get weaned off of drag racing. For me, it鈥檚 like a rehab you have to go through for two, three years, and now I鈥檝e got a whole new life. I never thought this could happen to me. I thought I would be the last guy when drag racing was over, the last guy that walked out of the track. I was going to be the guy who shut the lights off, but it didn鈥檛 end up that way, and lo and behold, it鈥檚 really worked out great. Before, the quarter mile was as far as I could see. That鈥檚 all you thought about day in and day out. And now it鈥檚 kind of cool.鈥? 鈥?How he spends his time now: 鈥淭he thing I like more than anything is Formula One racing and IndyCar. Outside of that, I have a good-size piece of property, so we鈥檙e building stuff here at the house and I鈥檓 into the landscaping.鈥? 鈥?Health: 鈥淚鈥檓 in good shape. I feel good. I could do it all again if I wanted to. I could get in one right now and kick one of those guys鈥?(butts) big time. I鈥檓 not gonna, but I know I could. I wasn鈥檛 big enough to play college sports or football. In high school, drag racing took the place for me of athletics. I started with half and quarter midgets, and in my teens it was cars. Drag racing was right after. I grew up in Lubbock, Texas, and the only type of racing that was available was drag racing. If I grew up in the South, I probably would have done the same thing only in stock car racing.鈥? 鈥?The need for speed: 鈥淲hen I was real young, my grandfather would let me drive his 鈥?4 Ford pickup truck. I was driving with him and my mother asked, 鈥楬ow鈥檇 he do?鈥?My grandfather said, 鈥楬e has a heavy foot.鈥?So I think it was designated to be that way from the beginning. Driving was just something I loved, and speed? I just love to go fast.鈥? 鈥?Sponsorship: 鈥淭he first few years from the late-1960s to 1980, drag racing was really a hobby. It wasn鈥檛 a full-time deal. I had a job. I did other things. In the late 鈥?9 to 鈥?0 season, I was fortunate to get Budweiser involved in my team, and 30-plus years later, we were still doing it with Budweiser, so it let me follow my dream and make a living at it.鈥? 鈥?First championship victory at age 41: 鈥淪uccess on the race track comes from experience. Almost any kind of sport, you get better as time goes on until the skills diminish. In drag racing, you don鈥檛 have to be young to be good.鈥? 鈥?The skills to succeed: 鈥淵ou鈥檝e got to have talent, good hand-eye coordination, tremendous concentration and the experience to go with it to know what鈥檚 right, what鈥檚 wrong and what the car is telling you.鈥? 鈥?Thoughts on safety: 鈥淎t 18 or 19, I鈥檇 drive anything. If it had a bucket for a seat, I鈥檇 drive it. It didn鈥檛 matter. We didn鈥檛 think about safety, and unfortunately we lost a lot of good people because the speed was way ahead of the safety. We would lose a driver every couple weeks in the early days because we just drove things you probably shouldn鈥檛 even sit in, but NHRA and the teams have done a tremendous job to improve everything over the years. The cars are safer than they鈥檝e ever been at a much higher speed than they鈥檝e ever been.鈥? 鈥?Retirement: 鈥淎fter 35 years, I concluded that I was done. I was tired. It was time to move on. It wasn鈥檛 going to be a lot of fun for me anymore, even though my son was driving for me and I was very proud. I鈥檓 not a very good watcher. It wasn鈥檛 as exciting for me as it was as a driver.鈥? 鈥?Hobbies: 鈥淲e鈥檝e done a lot of traveling.
