Since that recognition presentation, the Mayer Fire District board has determined a written policy should see completion - a criteria for the receipt of such awards through the fire district. The board met in executive session on the matter. Afterward, board member Russ Dodge recommended the board place a written reprimand in Chief Glenn Brown's file, in addition to a letter of apology written to service veterans, "and anyone who was offended by the improper use of a military medal."However, one board member pointed out that the agenda did not include an item for disciplinary action regarding the issuance of those awards."I will amend my letter of reprimand and remove that from my original motion," Dodge said.Brown explained his process for obtaining the medals during a phone interview. "I had an idea to give the award because of all the work we did to support those in the aftermath of the Hotshot 19 tragedy," he said. "I confirmed it with my previous board chairman and when the boards changed, I confirmed it with the new board chairman." Brown further explained that when he removed the medals from the packaging the night of the presentation, he noticed the U.S. Armed Services stamping on the back."I had the medals in my desk for several months. I didn't know it said this on the medals until we gave them out ... I have taken the medals back, I've issued an apology letter and I've returned them for full refund to the medal company," Brown said.He added that he never meant to issue the Humanitarian medals for any other purpose than to "thank those individuals, including my family." Dodge concluded that the medals did have U.S. Armed Forces on the back and, "that's why it was readdressed as a potential violation."In addition, the board made the decision, on Feb. 24, to place the matter on hold until a policy was put in place, Dodge said. Whisk in the beer until the batter is completely smooth and free of any lumps. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.Heat 2-3 inches of oil in a fryer or a heavy-bottom Dutch oven to 375 degrees.Pat the fish dry with paper towels.
