Would I trade the time and hassle it takes for me to walk through airport security with an unknown gas strapped across my chest? He was a family man and a strong advocate for peace and social justice. He loved music, sang in choirs and played brass instruments in high school and later in life. Burton was born in Artesia, NM, the youngest of Byrd A. and Clare Bishop鈥檚 three children. After he graduated from high school in Artesia, the family moved to Berkeley. He met Evelyn, his wife of 70 years, while they were students at UC Berkeley. They married in 1944 and honeymooned along the Russian River. Bishop graduated from Cal and Berkeley Baptist Divinity School. He served churches in Denver and Montrose, Colo. In the 1950s, he led YMCA student groups at Glendale and at Pasadena city colleges for 10 years. After moving to West Los Angeles, he had a 23-year social work career for L.A. County. He remained active in church leadership at Westwood Hills Congregational Church. In 1989, Burton and Evelyn Bishop moved to Sonoma County, settling in Sebastopol. In retirement, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels and joined the Sebastopol chapter of SIRS. He enjoyed playing his euphonium with the Sebastopol community band and the Community Church鈥檚 brass choir. Together, the Bishops enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and to many other countries. Bishop is survived by Evelyn and their four children, Bruce (Judy), Beth (Andy) Martinez, Evan (Marie O鈥橰egan) and Margo (Mike Butler); 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to caregivers Phyllis and Tara, the staff of Heartland Hospice, and the 鈥渇amily鈥?at the Community Church for their care and support during his final weeks. There will be a celebration of Bishop鈥檚 life at the Community Church of Sebastopol, 1000 Gravenstein Hwy. N. at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 22, with a reception to follow.
