The Common Core state standards (CCSS) is a copyrighted, top down, one-size-fits-all approach to education by the federal government that was never field tested before being presented to the states. Forty six states adopted the CCSS before they were even written The states did this primarily because they were offered waivers from certain requirements of No Child Left Behind and a chance to compete for billions of dollars in the "Race to the Top" program. These billions provided to the Department of Education came from the stimulus funds, courtesy of the Obama Administration. As so often the case many states, including Arkansas, are saying "not so fast". They are discovering this great and glorious package ain't what was advertized. Surprise! Surprise! A government program that might well do more harm than good and cost billions of dollars to implement. Critics say many of the activities and lessons in Common Core are not appropriate for the age group and there is little direct teaching. Teachers are being told they are now "facilitators". Students are encouraged to group problem solve and to focus on the process rather than the right answer. As an example take the rather simple math problem of subtracting 12 from 32. Most of us, using the old fashion way, would either do it in your head or simply construct a three line problem and write down 20 as the answer - not with common core or reconstructionst math. We must concentrate on the process and go through a five step program to explain why 32 minus 12 is 20. What a bunch of hogwash! No wonder this country ranks 17 in the world on math competency. A critical part of Common Core is the testing procedure known as the Partnership for Assessment of Readings for College and Careers (PARCC). Student scores on PARCC are used to evaluate school districts and as a result many teachers complain they spend about 20 days a full school month preparing for this test as opposed to concentrating on actual learning. As of this writing Arkansas has passed a bill in the House, that requires among other things, our state to withdraw from the PARCC consortium by June 30, 2015. This bill passed by a vote of 86 to1. The bill now goes to the Senate for passage and on to the Governor.Page 2 of 2 - Eliminating PARCC will place a dagger in the heart of Common Core. It presently costs a state over $280,000 to belong to the consortium. Of the original 26 states only 9 remain in the consortium. If Arkansas acts as expected, only 8 will remain. Certainly testing is necessary. What's wrong with the old Iowa Standard Tests that were used for so many years? Mark Brugner and a group of concerned citizens are diligently working on assisting 3rd graders in Heber Springs who are falling behind. One of the difficulties is to convince teachers to use one simple easy to understand test to measure progress. It seems the testing process is complicated, confusing and ineffective. Not too long ago there was a serious move from Republicans to get rid of the Federal Department of Education. Just the opposite has happened. We now have a monster that is trying to dictate to the states and bribing them with federal money if they will only allow the feds to dictate important aspects of education. Will we never learn? We are now approaching 20 trillion dollars in national debt and we still have many of our liberal friends wanting our government to do more in education, health care, regulations and less on the constitutional purpose of the Federal government - national defense. No matter how you come down on Common Core we in Cleburne County can learn a great lesson from one of our citizens, namely Betty Yerger. Since her retirement from teaching in Pangburn, she has covered the state with her seminars on the evils of Common Core. She and her team have lobbied our legislators diligently and persistently and spent days and days tirelessly promoting her anti-Common Core agenda. All this is being done by donating her time and travel costs.
