Wyoming's hospitals sustain some 100 million a year in "uncompensated care" - that is, unpaid medical bills. This is because many of the people who use their services, mainly the emergency rooms, can't afford to pay.Most of these patients are the state's working poor who do not have enough money for health insurance. The majority of them work one, or maybe two, minimum-wage jobs. But even with the help that Obamacare subsidies offer, they cannot afford the insurance premiums. Yet they make more money than the threshold that qualifies them for Medicaid. That is the health insurance program for the state's most needy people.So these people - as well as the hospitals, many of which are going broke under the burden of unpaid bills - need some kind of help. It was a complete and utter failure as a pilot; it never could have been run statewide. It would have bankrupted the general fund.It now is incumbent on these obstructionists to present a valid alternative. But they won't. They just hope it all goes away. Of course, it is not going to. The amount of unpaid hospital bills will keep going up and up and, yes, up.And then there are the taxpayers. Here's another connection of the dots: Since hospitals have these millions of dollars in unpaid bills, someone has to pay. That means those people who can afford health insurance - friends, that is you - get to pay the freight. Thus, your hospital bills go up. You've heard of the 50 aspirin, right? And because of that, you pay higher health insurance premiums or you see increases in your deductibles, a reduction in the services that your plans cover, or all of the above.So when your health-care premiums go up, you might forward the bill to Mr. Scott, Mr. Christensen or the others who have put politics ahead of giving the working poor a helping hand.
