At Newbury, champion trainer Richard Hannon is excited to see his star filly Tiggy Wiggy back in action in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes. http://rb.onlinestorecc.com/ - rb.onlinestorecc.com Editor's note: Mark Junge is a 72-year-old, oxygen-dependent, Cheyenne bicyclist. This is the fourth in a series of articles about his 2015 North American road trip - a 1,000 mile ride from Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Mark uses a portable oxygen concentrator and rides an electric-assist bicycle. There are strange things done in the midnight sunby the men who moil for gold; The Arctic trails have their secret talesThat would make your blood run cold; The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,But the queerest they ever did seeWas that night on the marge of Lake LebargeI cremated Sam McGee.- The Cremation of Sam McGee, Robert W. Service As a matter of fact, Ardath and I are now in the Land of the Midnight Sun, not far from the marge of Lake Laberge, where Sam McGee finally found some warmth. The difference is that it is summer and we are comfortably ensconced in our RV sitting in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, with a great Wi-Fi connection.Politely, any metaphor I could possibly squeeze out of Robert Service's well-known poem should end right there. But no, I feel the urge to extend it further. It has been raining off and on all day for two days. Right across the road from this parking lot is the Yukon River. Beyond the Yukon, the sun is spotlighting a bare rock outcropping in a pine forest that spreads forever north from the river. The outcropping is near where the pot of gold would be at the end of a wide rainbow that is piercing the cloud-flecked blue sky. True, it may be a poor substitute for the queer sights of Northern Lights, but what the heck. Now we lack only a cremation. Yet, strangely, there is some sort of funeral taking place a stone's throw away from where I am pecking these words on a laptop. If it isn't exactly a funeral, it's certainly an extended period of mourning for a dead seagull.Ardath is capturing on video the strange scene of a half-dozen seagulls screaming and dive-bombing a side channel of the Yukon River. In it lies the body of a deceased companion. The gulls swoop down and touch the water next to the body of their sister who floats lifeless on the cold sled of the Yukon River, all the while their screeching laments rising and falling as they lightly touch the water. This has been going on for more than an hour and continues into the evening. The companion of Sam McGee nearly went mad hauling McGee's lifeless hulk on a sled to a warmer place along the shores of Lake Laberge. Is there no surcease from all this wailing? Before stretching this excruciating metaphor any further, I should explain how my wife, Ardath, and I traveled the 1,000 miles from Prince George to Whitehorse so quickly.About midway up the Cassiar Highway, which connects Kitwanga, British Columbia, to Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, we decide to decamp from our rain-soaked spot located under a towering power line that is strung across a clear cut in the great boreal forest.Having been on the saddle of my electric-assist Haibike for nine of the past 11 days and pedaling more than 500 miles, my body insists on taking a break or it was going to break down right there along the rainy Cassiar. So instead of fighting off fatigue by camping for a couple of days, I decide to rest my body while driving to White Horse at the opposite end of my trek. When we decamp from Whitehorse on this day that I am writing, I will begin riding 500 miles south in order to reconnect with the Cassiar. So here we are in Whitehorse, recouping and resupplying instead of celebrating the end of our trip at the S.S. Klondike - a stern wheel steamboat and national historic site that sits along the Yukon River near downtown Whitehorse. By so doing, we will begin burning the candle from the other end, back to "Beautiful British Columbia."That is the motto on BC license plates and the word "beautiful" is justified, especially if one is pedaling in mid-summer with a bit of a tailwind, under a warm rather than an unbearably hot sun, and where road shoulders are wide and smooth. It was under those conditions a few days ago when I set a personal Haibike record, pedaling 71 miles through a boreal Garden of Eden.Maybe it's not the same garden depicted in illustrated editions of the Bible with vines, ferns, trees with serpents and naked people wearing fig leaves and enjoying apples, but it is certainly lush in its own way.Traffic was light. From either side of the road came the chirps and tweets of songbirds, and off to my right hidden streams gurgled and splashed beneath the concealment of berry bushes and alders.Carried along on the breeze created by the Haibike were the smells of fireweed, conifers and cottonwoods, and the fresh-cut grass that hems the highway for seemingly endless miles. And there are no problems from lions or tigers or bears. Those who bicycle in these northern climes are made aware that they might encounter black and grizzly bears, but so far I have not heard or read about a bicyclist attacked by a bear in any part of the route so far.Probably that is because bears are leery of humans and, in turn, people have learned not to feed bears. Bear-proof trash bins testify to the care provincial officials have taken to prevent bear-human contacts. But you do see a bear occasionally. Not far from Kitwanga and the beginning of the ride up the Cassiar I saw a bear on an embankment off to my right, chewing and looking at me as if to say, "So what's your problem? Haven't you ever seen a bear eating berries before?"A day or two later, further north on the Cassiar I guided the Haibike into a wide, highway trash bin turnout in order to take a breather and drink a bottle of flavored water fortified with energy-restoring ingredients. As I did so, a black bear ambled across the road ahead. No worries for either of us.Further up the Cassiar, the day before quitting the ride, a bicyclist from New Zealand swung over to warn me that a black bear was on the highway behind him and that the creature definitely was not moving to get out of his way. He told me that the driver of a jeep scared away the bear.I thanked him and pedaled only a short distance before Ardath came up the road in the RV in order to tell me about the bear. She may have saved the New Zealander's bacon because at a previous turnout she saw his predicament and asked the driver of a jeep parked nearby to drive up the highway and scare away the bear, which he did.Except for such minor incidents, there have been no problems with bears, and I am expecting none. But I am still leery of any four-footed creature with a skeleton and musculature resembling a human's that is capable of ripping stumps from the earth with his claws. It stays light in this Far North country longer than it does in Wyoming, even as days become shorter. In the dim fog of late night or early morning I ask Ardath if it is tomorrow yet. She rolls over in bed and replies, "No, it's still yesterday."More anon.
